SFA program - Ice Rescue Technician – NFPA 1006

Overview

This course is designed to train the rescuer to the requirements found in NFPA 1006 Chapter 20, in a safe atmosphere. Ice water rescue training is some of the most hazardous training undertaken by technical rescuers. SFA is committed to student safety and success, and as such, we only use experienced water rescue instructors and adhere to strict 5:1 student to instructor ratios. We practice a dictatorial accountability and entry control system. Students are provided with the best PPE and equipment available to technical rescuers. Students will perform skill stations that include:

  • Command and size-up
  • Shore based rescue
  • Ice water based rescue
  • RDC based rescue

Make no mistake, this is an entry level course, so the waterways we use are static in nature. We believe that rescuers must first learn basic skills in a safe environment before moving into more difficult conditions. To that end, you will not be exposed to a swiftwater environment.

Topics include: determining search parameters, setting up control barriers, using appropriate equipment and PPE, assessing ice and water conditions, determining environmental factors and their effects on victims, understanding effects of hydrodynamic forces on rescuers and victims, performing self-rescue, and the utilization of victim rescue techniques.

If you are looking for safe, quality training, look no further.
