Overview
This course includes all the learning and skills required for NFPA 1006 (2021) Floodwater Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician Skills. Utilizing SFA’s student manual and Job Performance Requirements, students will be qualified to Southwest Fire Academy’s Floodwater Rescue Program. This course is designed to train the novice water rescuer to the requirements found in NFPA 1006 Chapter 23, in a safe atmosphere.
Topics include: identifying parameters at search and rescue incidents, determining resource availability, utilizing appropriate resources, obtaining victim information, mitigating hazards, working with contaminants, implementing methods of removal, and terminating an incident.
Water rescue training is some of the most hazardous training undertaken by technical rescuers. SFA is committed to student safety and success, and as such, we only use experienced water rescue instructors and adhere to strict 5:1 student to instructor ratios. We practice a dictatorial accountability and entry control system. Students are provided with the best PPE and equipment available to technical rescuers. Students will perform skill stations that include:
- Command and size-up
- Shore based rescue
- Water based rescue
- RDC based rescue
This is a novice level course, as such, our water environment selection will be easily manageable. If you are looking for safe, quality training, look no further.
Prerequisites
SFA Surface Water Rescue Technician – NFPA 1006, or equivalent.
Be advised that all candidates must successfully complete a swim test on the first day of the course, which involves:
- 15 minute tread water without PFD
- 100 meter swim with PFD
- Maneuvering a course with an RDC

After the skills day in the water environment, students will participate in several scenarios that include incident command, safety officer, sector officers, risk and hazard assessments, and multiple victims.
All training is conducted safely in accordance with Section 21 Guidance Notes, NFPA Standards for Increased Hazard Exposure Training, and experienced Southwest Fire Academy instructors with a 5:1 student to instructor ratio.
Certification
Candidates successful in this program will receive a certificate of completion from Southwest Fire Academy. The OFMEM does not currently administer testing for this course; however, when it is available, students with a certificate of completion will qualify for the testing. Any OFMEM testing must be registered for separately, as this is not included in the SFA course.

Please note: if this course is not filled to 75% capacity 7 days before it is scheduled to begin, it may be cancelled. In the event of course cancellation, you will be provided adequate notice and a full refund.
Accommodations may be available upon request for the duration of your program. If you are staying for one or two nights, the flat rate for accommodations is $50 plus taxes. If you are staying for three or more nights, the fee is $100 plus taxes, total. Regardless of how long you are on campus, your fee will not exceed $100 plus taxes. This fee grants you access to your bunk, a communal kitchen, parking, and washroom/shower facilities.
