Overview

This course teaches the most advanced techniques for firefighter survival and rapid intervention. Become the most valuable firefighter by perfecting your skills for self-rescue and the rescue of your crew. During your training, you will advance your knowledge on such topics as: the roles of crew members during rapid intervention, diverse search techniques, access and extrication, varied methods of self-rescue, and locating and removing a downed firefighter from varied locations and situations. SFA will train you to think critically and think outside the box with self rescue and RIT skills, to enable you to be safe and strategic as a firefighter, and invaluable as a member of your crew.

SFA Beyond the Academy courses provide qualified and active firefighters with the opportunity to learn specialized skills and advanced techniques using custom SFA props. These courses are taught by expert instructors with vast real-life experience. Become the best, trained by the best.

Prerequisites

Firefighter Pre-Service – Firefighter II – NFPA 1001

Program Components

This course includes training on:

  • Basement self rescue
  • Through the floor rescue
  • Upper floor bail-outs
  • Drags and carries
  • Strategic continuity management

All training is conducted safely in accordance with Section 21 Guidance Notes, NFPA Standards for Increased Hazard Exposure Training, and experienced Southwest Fire Academy instructors with a 5:1 student to instructor ratio.

Certification

Candidates successful in this program will receive a certificate of completion from Southwest Fire Academy. The OFMEM does not administer testing for this course.

Note: SCBA and PPE are available to rent, for an additional fee

What to Bring

  • CSA approved footwear
  • Bunker Gear and SCBA, with a spare cylinder
  • Station workwear (long pants required)

Additional Information

Please note: if this course is not filled to 75% capacity 7 days before it is scheduled to begin, it may be cancelled. In the event of course cancellation, you will be provided adequate notice and a full refund.  

Accommodations may be available upon request for the duration of your program. If you are staying for one or two nights, the flat rate for accommodations is $50 plus taxes. If you are staying for three or more nights, the fee is $100 plus taxes, total. Regardless of how long you are on campus, your fee will not exceed $100 plus taxes. This fee grants you access to your bunk, a communal kitchen, parking, and washroom/shower facilities.
