    This program is held over two weekends. Nov 1 (night), 2,3 & Nov 8 (night),9,10

    1 Day or 8 hours of OFMEM Certification Testing for NFPA 1006 (2013) General Rescue

    NOTE – Pre-Service students will be required to pay the OFMEM a $175.00 testing fee.  This is not a Southwest Fire Academy Fee.  Municipal firefighters are exempt from this fee if their fire department signs them in for the testing.

     

    Course Description:

    Southwest Fire Academy provides candidates with a unique training opportunity for candidates to become trained and qualified to NFPA 1006 Rope Rescue Operations Level.  This 4-day course exceeds the requirements outlined in NFPA 1006(17) and NFPA 1670(17).  Successful students will receive a certificate and completed Job Performance Requirements.  Training includes:

    • Equipment familiarization / inspection and maintenance
    • Rigging Anchor Systems
    • Rigging Lowering Systems
    • Rigging Hauling Systems
    • Incident Management

     

    Candidates will experience training sessions as well as they will run several scenarios based on actual calls that our instructors have experienced!

     

    We can outfit our candidates with the best PPE available in the rescue industry.  Additionally, unlike many of our competitors, students will experience a 5:1 student to instructor ratio and the course will have an independent safety officer.  Not only will this ensure a safe training experience, it allows us to break students into stations for training ensuring our students spend their time doing not watching!

    Course Description:

    Southwest Fire Academy designed the surface water rescue course to take the novice rescuer and train them to the requirements found in NFPA 1006 Chapter 19 in a safe atmosphere.  Ice water rescue training is some of the most hazardous training undertaken by technical rescuers.  SFA is committed to student’s safety and success and as such we only use experienced water rescue instructors and adhere to strict 5:1 student to instructor ratios and we practice a dictatorial accountability and entry control system.

    We provide students with the best PPE and equipment available to technical rescuers.  Students will perform skill stations that include:

    • Command and Size-up
    • Shore Based Rescue
    • Ice - Water Based Rescue
    • RDC Based Rescue

     

    Make no mistake, this is an entry level course and as such the waterways we use are static in nature.  We believe that rescuers must first learn basic skills in a safe environment before moving into more difficult conditions.  To that end, you will not be exposed to a swift ice water environment.  If you are looking for safe quality training, look no further.

     

    Prerequisite:

    SFA Surface Water Rescue Technician or Equivalent

    SFA Swim Test – Completed on first day of course in a swimming pool.

    • 15 minute tread water without PFD
    • 100 meter swim with PFD
    • Maneuvering a course with an RDC

    We provide students with the best PPE and equipment available to technical rescuers.  Students will perform skill stations that include:

    • Command and Size-up

    • Ice - Water Based Rescue
    • Control Line Rigging
    • Self-Rescue
    • RDC Based Rescue

     

    Make no mistake, this is an entry level course and as such the waterways we train in are Class I or Class II.  We believe that rescuers must first learn basic skills in a safe environment before moving into more difficult conditions.  To that end, you will not be exposed to an unsafe or extreme environment.  If you are looking for safe quality training, look no further.

    Course Description:

    Southwest Fire Academy provides candidates with a unique training opportunity that exceeds the requirements in NFPA 1006 Chapter 8.  One of the most common technical rescues that a fire department responds to is a motor vehicle collision.  This program is an in-depth hand’s on training program that will see the students qualified to NFPA 1006 Chapter 8 (Vehicle Rescue) Awareness and Operations over three days.  The candidates will enjoy a 5:1 student to instructor ratio with several practical stations including:

    • Size-up and Command
    • Scene and Vehicle Stabilization
    • Patient Care
    • Basic Extrication Practices – Hand Tools
    • Advanced Extrication Practices – Hydraulics

     

    After candidates complete the required training stations, they will participate in several scenarios designed around complicated vehicle rescues that our instructors have responded to in the performance of their duties

     

    SFA sets up multiple pits with specialized skill station scenarios:

    • Paratech Air Bags

    We take pride in providing more equipment and more vehicles than students to ensure that EVERY student gets to perform EVERY task multiple times, this is not a stand back and watch a demonstration type of program!  In addition to the incredible hands on opportunities, another area that this course focuses on is patient care.  Every scenario will involve victims and patient care is a core component to the successful completion of the evolution.

    Course Description:

    This is a three-day course for the rescuer who has vehicle rescue experience and could respond to motor vehicle collisions involving commercial vehicles.   This program is an in-depth hand’s on training program that will see the students qualified to NFPA 1006 Chapter 8 (Vehicle Rescue) Technician.  The candidates will enjoy a 5:1 student to instructor ratio with several practical stations including:

    • Size-up and Command
    • Scene and Vehicle Stabilization – Commercial Vehicles and Loads
    • HAZMAT Considerations
    • Lifting Loads
    • Patient Care
    • Basic Extrication Practices – Hand Tools
    • Advanced Extrication Practices – Hydraulics

     

    This is scenario-based training.  Our instructors will act as resources and coaches while students participate in several scenarios designed around complicated rescues that our instructors have responded to in the performance of their duties.  Every scenario will involve victims in a variety of environments and patient care is a core component to the successful completion of the evolution.

     

    This course is limited to 12 students and is designed to challenge the students understanding of technical rescue principals and practice.

    • Size-up and Command
    • Lockout / Tagout / Blockout
    • Patient Care
    • Basic Extrication Practices – Hand Tools
    • Advanced Extrication Practices – Disassembly

     

    After candidates complete the required training stations, they will participate in several scenarios designed around complicated vehicle rescues that our instructors have responded to in the performance of their duties

     

    We take pride in providing more equipment and more vehicles than students to ensure that EVERY student gets to perform EVERY task multiple times, this is not a stand back and watch a demonstration type of program!  In addition to the incredible hands on opportunities, another area that this course focuses on is patient care.  Every scenario will involve victims and patient care is a core component to the successful completion of the evolution.
