Course Name – SFA NFPA 1072(17) Hazardous Materials Operations Level
Course Length:
40 Hours of Online Interactive Pre-Class
3 Days or 20 Hours of Practical Instruction
2 Days or 16 hours of OFMEM Certification Testing for NFPA 1072(17) HAZMAT Operations
NOTE – Pre-Service students will be required to pay the OFMEM a $175.00 testing fee. Municipal firefighters are exempt from this fee if their fire department signs them in for the testing.
Course Description:
Southwest Fire Academy provides candidates with a unique training opportunity for candidates to become trained and qualified to NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Level. This 76-hour course meets the requirements outlined in NFPA 1072(17). Successful students will receive a certificate and completed Job Performance Requirements. Training includes:
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Surveying an incident
- Characteristics of hazardous materials
- Development of an incident
- Decontamination
- Incident command
Candidates will experience training sessions as well as they will run several scenarios based on actual calls that our instructors have experienced!
Prerequisite:
None
What to Bring to Class:
- A safety-first attitude and open mind
- CSA approved footwear (steel toe)
- Camera – we encourage you take pictures
- Station work wear – long pants / long sleeves recommended

SFA offers realistic training on life size and interactive props that ensure that our students face the challenges of mitigating a hazardous materials emergency while wearing PPE including:
- Level A Suits
- Level B Suits
- SAR
- SCBA
